Project Manager, Discovery

4D Molecular Therapeutics, located in Emeryville, CA is a global leader in gene therapy product research & development using scientific innovation to unlock the full potential of gene therapy for patients with genetic diseases. At 4D Molecular Therapeutics, our goal is to design and develop transformative gene therapy products using our proprietary adeno-associated virus variants platform to treat serious unmet medical conditions.

The Discovery and Engineering Team at 4DMT uses Therapeutic Vector Evolution to discover novel, proprietary AAV vectors to give patients the best clinical benefit in gene therapy. The team seeks a strong, talented and organized PM to track progress, assist outsourcing work to CRO’s, and manage resourcing and prioritization of team projects. This role as Discovery PM will be of high value to the company. There will be the need to interact and present to the 4DMT executive and management team as the focal point of this function. This important role reports directly to the VP, Program Management.


  • Work with the Discovery Team to establish and track timelines to ensure corporate milestones are achieved
  • Work as a liaison between the internal team and third-party CRO’s; including generation of quotes and tracking of all CRO work
  • Establish CDA, MSA, and other contract needs to support outsource work
  • Identify key areas that need additional resources and develop reports and suggestions for consideration with upper management
  • Be proactive in risk identification and risk mitigation
  • Keep detailed Gantt’s to inform team and management of progress and risks
  • Organize meetings by scheduling, preparing agendas, taking minutes, tracking decisions and action items
  • Willingness to learn the Discovery platform in detail and work closely with the team of scientists
  • Be able to navigate a fast-paced biotech environment and have the ability to drive progress, keep key stakeholders updated, and flag potential problems or risks


  • A BS or MS in a biological science
  • 5+ years of industry project management experience
  • Strong scientific experience and ability to be a part of a scientific team
  • Should bring research to early stage industry experience
  • Gene therapy experience a plus
  • Must have experience using programs to develop Gantt charts, ideally MS Project
  • Must have experience working with CROs, including contract management
  • Proficiency in Power Point and ability to present in an organized manner to the upper management team to gain approvals of plans and budget
  • Solid practical working knowledge of project management techniques and concepts
  • Must have excellent reading comprehension and the ability to understand complex outsourcing contracts
  • Ability to capture scientific discussion in the form of meeting minutes, decision points and action items
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, adapt to a diverse workload, and follow through on projects in a timely manner
  • Confident and respectful when interacting with all levels of management; stays focused and on-point, and raises problems or challenges in a productive, solution-minded manner
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor
