Laboratory Technician

4D Molecular Therapeutics, located in Emeryville, CA is a global leader in gene therapy product research & development using scientific innovation to unlock the full potential of gene therapy for patients with genetic diseases. At 4D Molecular Therapeutics, our goal is to design and develop transformative gene therapy products using our proprietary adeno-associated virus variants platform to treat serious unmet medical conditions. 4D is in need of a talented and motivated Laboratory Technician to join our team in supporting our viral drug therapy research efforts as we contribute to the future of gene therapeutics. The Laboratory Technician will work directly with 4D’s scientists and research associates on preparing essential stock solutions, organizing and maintaining inventories, and characterizing plasmid samples.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Performing DNA plasmid preps, sequence analysis, and restriction digests in support of plasmid characterization and QC efforts
  • Organizing, generating, and maintaining inventory of research samples
  • Preparing and aliquoting buffers and other stock solutions
  • Cleaning and sterilizing glassware
  • Cleaning and sterilizing hoods and safety cabinets
  • Ordering and stocking common use supplies
  • Maintaining cell cultures
  • Maintaining current training requirements
  • Maintaining compliance to company Environmental Health and Safety policies, procedures, and practices


  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in one of the following disciplines: Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, or a related field
  • Prior experience working in a laboratory setting is advantageous; experience in biological laboratory is preferred
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and patient
  • Ability to follow recipes and protocols
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique
  • Experience making sterile essential buffers and stock solutions is desirable
  • Experience handling bacteria cultures is desirable
  • Experience using single and multichannel pipettes is desirable
  • Experience with procedures such as PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, and gel electrophoresis is desirable
  • Strong work ethic, flexibility, and cooperative can-do attitude
  • Ability to work independently in a collaborative team-oriented setting
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize to support more than one project simultaneously
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
